This page is maintained by Melo to answer common privacy questions about the Melo Services. The statements below describe Melo’s current data-handling practices. If you have questions, contact us at support@melopiano.ai.

Melo (“Melo,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) respects your privacy and is committed to protecting the personal information we collect and process. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, retain, and protect personal information when you access or use:

  • the Melo website at melopiano.ai;
  • the Melo mobile or web applications;
  • Melo’s piano-learning, practice, transcription, arrangement, creator, and artificial intelligence features;
  • any beta, early-access, support, promotional, or related services that link to this Privacy Policy.

Together, these are referred to as the “Services.” By accessing or using the Services, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Privacy Policy. When consent is legally required, we will request it separately or through the applicable feature.

You are not legally required to provide personal information to us. However, certain information is necessary to create an account or use particular features. If you choose not to provide it, some parts of the Services may not function.

1. Information We Collect

We may collect information directly from you, automatically through your use of the Services, from your device, and from third parties that help us operate the Services.

1.1 Account and Profile Information

When you create or maintain a Melo account, we may collect:

  • your name;
  • username or display name;
  • email address;
  • password, which is stored in hashed or otherwise protected form;
  • profile photograph or avatar;
  • account preferences;
  • piano experience or skill level;
  • musical interests and practice goals;
  • age or date-of-birth information when reasonably necessary;
  • parent or guardian information when required;
  • creator, teacher, or arranger profile information;
  • communication and notification preferences.

1.2 Piano, Audio, MIDI, and Project Information

Depending on the features you use, Melo may collect or process:

  • audio recorded through your device’s microphone;
  • piano performances and other recordings you upload;
  • audio or video files you submit for transcription or analysis;
  • MIDI input and MIDI files;
  • notes, chords, timing, tempo, velocity, pitch, rhythm, and similar musical information;
  • arrangements, transcriptions, sheet music, falling-note visualizations, annotations, bookmarks, loops, and practice sections;
  • song links or source references you submit;
  • project names, descriptions, versions, edits, and settings;
  • difficulty selections and left-hand or right-hand preferences;
  • creator-uploaded arrangements and related content;
  • feedback, corrections, and ratings associated with generated results.

We may derive additional information from these materials, such as pitch estimates, note events, timing data, practice accuracy, performance patterns, or suggested arrangements.

Unless a feature clearly states otherwise, projects and uploaded recordings are treated as private by default and are not publicly displayed merely because you upload them.

1.3 Practice and Usage Information

We may collect information about how you interact with Melo, including:

  • songs viewed, searched, played, saved, purchased, or practiced;
  • practice duration, frequency, progress, completion, and streaks;
  • tempo selections and difficulty adjustments;
  • correct notes, incorrect notes, skipped notes, timing, and practice accuracy;
  • use of Wait Mode, looping, hand separation, bookmarks, transcription, and arrangement features;
  • favorite songs, followed creators, recently played songs, and saved projects;
  • feature interactions, navigation paths, clicks, taps, scrolling, and session activity;
  • crashes, errors, failed uploads, latency, and performance information.

1.4 Device and Technical Information

We and our service providers may automatically collect:

  • Internet Protocol address;
  • browser type and version;
  • device type, model, and operating system;
  • device identifiers;
  • language and regional settings;
  • approximate location derived from an IP address;
  • application version;
  • referral source;
  • access dates and times;
  • network, diagnostic, security, and activity logs;
  • cookies, software development kits, pixels, and similar technologies.

We do not collect precise device location unless a feature specifically requires it and you grant permission.

1.5 Payment and Transaction Information

If Melo offers paid subscriptions, song purchases, creator purchases, or other paid services, we may collect:

  • billing name and address;
  • transaction amount;
  • subscription or purchase status;
  • purchase date;
  • payment method type;
  • transaction identifiers;
  • refund and cancellation information.

Payment card numbers may be collected and processed directly by a third-party payment processor or application marketplace. Melo may not receive or store your complete payment card number.

1.6 Communications and Support Information

When you contact us, participate in research, complete a survey, or submit feedback, we may collect:

  • the contents of your message;
  • your contact information;
  • support requests and troubleshooting information;
  • survey and interview responses;
  • screenshots, recordings, files, or device details you provide;
  • correspondence concerning intellectual property or content complaints;
  • beta feedback and product-testing information.

1.7 Information From Third Parties

We may receive information from:

  • authentication or sign-in providers;
  • payment processors and application marketplaces;
  • analytics and crash-reporting providers;
  • hosting and cloud-service providers;
  • creators, teachers, arrangers, and content partners;
  • marketing, referral, or social media platforms;
  • publicly available sources;
  • other users who invite or refer you to Melo.

If you sign in through a third-party service, the information we receive depends on that service, your settings, and the permissions you grant.

2. Microphone, Audio, and MIDI Permissions

Certain Melo features may require access to your microphone, MIDI device, files, camera roll, or media library.

For example, Melo may use microphone or MIDI access to:

  • detect piano notes during Wait Mode;
  • determine whether you played the expected note;
  • provide timing or accuracy feedback;
  • transcribe a piano performance;
  • generate or edit a musical arrangement;
  • synchronize your performance with falling notes;
  • diagnose feature performance when you submit a support report.

Your device may ask you to grant permission before Melo accesses these features. You may revoke permission through your device or browser settings, but doing so may prevent the applicable feature from working.

Where technically feasible, certain pitch detection or performance analysis may occur locally on your device. Other processing may require data to be transmitted securely to Melo’s servers or a service provider. The applicable feature may identify which processing method is used.

Melo does not use your device microphone to listen continuously when you are not actively using a microphone-enabled feature.

3. How We Use Personal Information

We may use personal information to:

3.1 Provide and Operate Melo

  • create, authenticate, and maintain accounts;
  • provide piano-learning and practice features;
  • process audio, video, MIDI, or project files;
  • generate transcriptions, arrangements, falling notes, sheet music, or practice feedback;
  • detect notes and operate Wait Mode;
  • save progress, settings, favorites, projects, and purchases;
  • enable creator, teacher, or arranger features;
  • process payments, subscriptions, cancellations, and refunds;
  • provide requested customer support.

3.2 Personalize the Experience

  • recommend songs, creators, arrangements, or practice material;
  • remember difficulty, tempo, hand, display, and accessibility preferences;
  • tailor onboarding or practice suggestions;
  • display recently practiced content and progress;
  • improve search and content discovery.

3.3 Develop and Improve the Services

  • understand how features are used;
  • measure performance, reliability, and user engagement;
  • investigate errors and failed AI results;
  • test and improve note detection, transcription, arrangement, and recommendation systems;
  • evaluate new features;
  • conduct internal research and analysis;
  • create aggregated or de-identified statistics.

Unless we provide notice and obtain any consent required by law, Melo will not use your private audio recordings, private videos, or private musical projects to train general-purpose artificial intelligence models that are made available to unrelated third parties.

Melo may use limited data to operate, evaluate, secure, and improve its own features, including through human review when reasonably necessary. Where practical, we will use de-identified, aggregated, sampled, or minimized data for these purposes.

3.4 Communicate With You

  • send account, security, verification, and password-reset messages;
  • send purchase, billing, renewal, cancellation, or refund notices;
  • provide product updates and beta announcements;
  • respond to questions and support requests;
  • request feedback or invite you to product research;
  • send promotional communications where permitted.

You may opt out of promotional email by using the unsubscribe link in the message. You cannot opt out of essential service messages relating to your account, security, purchases, or legal notices.

3.5 Protect Melo and Its Users

  • detect and prevent fraud, abuse, unauthorized access, or security incidents;
  • enforce our agreements and community or content rules;
  • investigate prohibited or unlawful conduct;
  • protect intellectual property and other legal rights;
  • verify compliance with upload and creator requirements;
  • maintain the integrity and safety of the Services.

3.6 Meet Legal Obligations

  • comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal process, and governmental requests;
  • maintain tax, financial, and transaction records;
  • respond to privacy, copyright, or other legal requests;
  • establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

4. Legal Bases for Processing

Where laws such as the European Economic Area or United Kingdom data-protection laws apply, we process personal information based on one or more of the following legal grounds:

  • Performance of a contract: processing necessary to provide the Services you request.
  • Consent: processing you have affirmatively authorized, such as certain microphone access, marketing, or optional data uses.
  • Legitimate interests: processing reasonably necessary to operate, secure, understand, and improve Melo, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights.
  • Legal obligations: processing required to comply with applicable law.
  • Protection of vital interests: processing necessary to protect a person’s health, safety, or vital interests in limited circumstances.

You may withdraw consent at any time where consent is the applicable legal basis. Withdrawal does not affect processing that occurred before consent was withdrawn.

5. How We Share Information

We do not sell personal information for money.

We may disclose personal information in the following circumstances.

5.1 Service Providers

We may share information with companies that perform services for us, including:

  • cloud hosting and data-storage providers;
  • authentication and account-management providers;
  • audio, video, transcription, MIDI, machine-learning, and artificial-intelligence providers;
  • payment processors and application marketplaces;
  • email, messaging, and customer-support providers;
  • analytics, crash-reporting, testing, and performance-monitoring providers;
  • fraud-prevention and cybersecurity providers;
  • content-delivery networks;
  • legal, accounting, insurance, and professional advisors.

These providers may process information only for authorized purposes and subject to contractual, technical, or legal restrictions appropriate to their role.

Some artificial-intelligence providers may receive content submitted through an AI-enabled feature. We will configure provider privacy and retention settings where reasonably available and appropriate. Users should not submit highly sensitive personal information through a musical transcription or arrangement feature.

5.2 Creators, Teachers, and Content Partners

When you purchase, follow, interact with, or provide feedback concerning a creator, teacher, or arranger, we may provide that partner with limited information such as:

  • aggregated viewing, practice, or purchase statistics;
  • revenue and transaction information relating to their content;
  • ratings or feedback you choose to provide;
  • public profile information;
  • information necessary to administer a creator relationship.

We will not provide creators with your private recordings or private projects unless you deliberately share them or authorize the disclosure.

5.3 Public and User-Directed Sharing

Certain features may allow you to publish a profile, post an arrangement, share a project, or send content to another person.

Information you intentionally publish may be visible to other users or the public. You are responsible for choosing what to share. Removing content later may not remove copies previously saved or shared by others.

5.4 Legal and Safety Disclosures

We may disclose information when we reasonably believe disclosure is necessary to:

  • comply with a law, subpoena, court order, or legal process;
  • respond to a valid request from a governmental or law-enforcement authority;
  • investigate fraud, infringement, abuse, or illegal activity;
  • enforce our terms or agreements;
  • protect Melo, our users, creators, partners, or the public;
  • establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

5.5 Corporate Transactions

Information may be disclosed or transferred as part of a financing, merger, acquisition, restructuring, bankruptcy, sale of assets, due-diligence review, or similar corporate transaction.

Any recipient will be permitted to use personal information only in accordance with applicable law and any commitments that continue to apply.

5.6 With Your Direction or Consent

We may share information for another purpose when you request, authorize, or consent to the disclosure.

6. Cookies and Similar Technologies

Melo and its service providers may use cookies, local storage, pixels, software development kits, and similar technologies to:

  • keep you signed in;
  • remember settings and preferences;
  • secure accounts;
  • understand how the Services are used;
  • identify crashes or technical problems;
  • measure feature and marketing performance;
  • personalize content;
  • prevent fraud and abuse.

Some cookies are removed when you close your browser. Others remain for a longer period.

You may control cookies through your browser or device settings. Blocking certain technologies may cause some portions of Melo to function incorrectly.

Where required, Melo will provide a cookie or tracking consent tool. We will not use optional advertising or nonessential tracking technologies where consent is required unless the required consent has been obtained.

Melo’s current response to browser-based “Do Not Track” signals may vary because there is not a universally accepted technical standard. Where legally required, we will recognize applicable opt-out preference signals, such as the Global Privacy Control.

7. Advertising and Sale or Sharing of Personal Information

Melo may use limited information to measure or promote its Services. Depending on the technologies and partners used, certain privacy laws may define some advertising disclosures as a “sale,” “sharing,” or use for “targeted advertising,” even when no money changes hands.

Where applicable, we will provide legally required notices and opt-out methods.

Melo does not knowingly sell or share the personal information of users under 16 for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Melo does not use private piano recordings, private MIDI performances, or private projects for third-party behavioral advertising.

8. Data Retention

We retain personal information for only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including to:

  • maintain your account;
  • provide and improve the Services;
  • preserve projects and progress you ask us to store;
  • complete transactions;
  • comply with legal, tax, accounting, or reporting obligations;
  • investigate disputes, fraud, or security incidents;
  • enforce our agreements;
  • establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

Retention periods may vary depending on the type of information.

For example:

  • account information may be retained while your account remains active;
  • active projects and practice history may be retained until you delete them or your account;
  • uploaded files may be retained while needed to provide the requested feature and for a limited backup or recovery period;
  • transaction records may be retained as required by financial or tax law;
  • security and diagnostic logs may be retained for a limited operational period;
  • deleted information may remain temporarily in backups before being securely overwritten.

We may retain aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably be used to identify you.

You may request account or project deletion as described below.

9. Data Security

Melo uses reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect personal information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure.

These measures may include:

  • encryption in transit;
  • access controls;
  • authentication safeguards;
  • restricted employee and contractor access;
  • logging and monitoring;
  • secure hosting;
  • credential and key management;
  • vendor review;
  • backup and recovery procedures.

No website, application, database, or transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure. You are responsible for using a strong password, protecting your account credentials, and notifying us if you suspect unauthorized access.

10. International Data Transfers

Melo and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries where they operate.

The privacy and data-protection laws of those countries may differ from those in your location. Where required, we will use recognized safeguards for international transfers, which may include contractual protections, adequacy decisions, or other legally accepted mechanisms.

11. Your Privacy Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • know whether we process your personal information;
  • request access to personal information we hold about you;
  • request correction of inaccurate information;
  • request deletion of personal information;
  • request a portable copy of certain information;
  • restrict or object to certain processing;
  • withdraw consent;
  • opt out of targeted advertising, sale, or sharing where applicable;
  • appeal a decision concerning a privacy request;
  • receive equal service and pricing without unlawful discrimination for exercising your rights;
  • lodge a complaint with a relevant data-protection authority.

You may also be able to update certain account information directly through Melo’s settings.

We may need to verify your identity before processing a request. Verification may require information reasonably necessary to confirm that the request concerns your account or information.

An authorized agent may submit a request where permitted by law. We may require evidence that the agent has authority to act for you and may separately verify your identity.

We may deny or limit a request where permitted by law, including where we cannot reasonably verify identity, need to retain information to comply with law, or an exception applies. Where legally required, we will explain the decision and available appeal process.

12. California Privacy Notice

This section applies to California residents to the extent the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, applies to Melo.

During the preceding 12 months, Melo may have collected the following categories of personal information:

  • identifiers;
  • customer-record information;
  • commercial information;
  • Internet or electronic-network activity;
  • audio, electronic, visual, or similar information;
  • geolocation information at an approximate level;
  • professional or employment information for creators, contractors, or applicants;
  • education-related or skill-level information voluntarily supplied by users;
  • inferences drawn from practice, content, and activity information;
  • sensitive personal information, such as account credentials or precise content of private communications, where applicable.

The specific information collected, sources, uses, and disclosures are described elsewhere in this Privacy Policy.

Melo may disclose these categories to service providers, contractors, payment providers, professional advisors, creators, corporate transaction participants, and government authorities for the purposes described above.

Melo does not sell personal information for money.

Melo does not use or disclose sensitive personal information for purposes other than those permitted by applicable California law unless we provide the required notice and choice.

California residents may have rights to know, access, correct, delete, or obtain certain information and to opt out of sale, sharing, or targeted advertising. Requests may be submitted to privacy@melopiano.ai.

13. Children and Teen Users

Melo is a piano-learning service that may appeal to teenagers and families. However, the Services are not directed to children under 13, and children under 13 may not create an account or provide personal information to Melo unless Melo has implemented an authorized parental-consent experience that complies with applicable law.

Users between 13 and the age of legal majority in their location may use Melo only with the permission and supervision of a parent or legal guardian where required.

Parents and guardians should review a minor’s use of:

  • microphone-enabled features;
  • audio, video, and MIDI uploads;
  • public profiles;
  • creator or community features;
  • purchases and subscriptions;
  • sharing or publishing tools.

If we learn that we collected personal information from a child under 13 without legally sufficient parental consent, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

A parent or guardian who believes a child has provided personal information improperly may contact privacy@melopiano.ai.

Melo may introduce separate age-verification, parental-consent, family-account, or youth-privacy procedures as the Services develop.

14. Uploaded Music and Third-Party Content

You should upload or submit only material that you have the legal right to use.

Uploaded content may contain personal information about you or another person. You are responsible for obtaining any permission required before submitting another person’s voice, image, performance, composition, arrangement, or personal information.

Melo may process copyrighted music solely to provide the feature you request, subject to Melo’s Terms of Use and applicable licenses, permissions, restrictions, and law.

This Privacy Policy addresses personal information. It does not determine ownership of songs, compositions, recordings, arrangements, transcriptions, MIDI files, or user content. Ownership and licensing matters are addressed by Melo’s Terms of Use, creator agreements, and other applicable contracts.

15. Artificial Intelligence Features

Melo may use artificial intelligence and automated systems to:

  • identify pitches, rhythms, chords, and notes;
  • transcribe performances;
  • create or modify arrangements;
  • adjust difficulty;
  • separate or classify left- and right-hand notes;
  • recommend practice material;
  • provide feedback;
  • detect technical errors or improve system performance.

AI-generated results may be incomplete, incorrect, or inaccurate. Users should review generated musical content before relying on, publishing, teaching, licensing, or performing it.

Information submitted to an AI-enabled feature may be processed by Melo and contracted technology providers to return the requested result, maintain security, diagnose errors, and improve service performance as described in this Privacy Policy.

Melo will not represent AI-generated output as completely accurate and does not use automated decision-making to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects concerning users.

16. Third-Party Services and Links

The Services may contain links to or integrations with third-party websites, platforms, payment processors, app stores, video services, music services, authentication providers, or social networks.

Third parties operate under their own terms and privacy policies. Melo is not responsible for their privacy, security, or content practices.

You should review the privacy policy of any third-party service before providing information to it.

17. Beta and Early-Access Services

Melo may offer beta, prototype, preview, or early-access features. Beta features may collect additional diagnostic information to help us:

  • identify bugs;
  • understand feature use;
  • evaluate accuracy;
  • investigate crashes;
  • improve usability;
  • measure whether a feature works as intended.

We will use this information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. Beta testers should avoid uploading confidential, highly sensitive, or irreplaceable information unless the feature expressly supports that use.

Beta features may change, fail, or be discontinued, and information associated with them may be deleted as part of testing or product changes.

18. Business Accounts, Schools, and Organizations

Melo may later permit schools, teachers, studios, businesses, or other organizations to manage accounts.

When you use Melo through an organization, that organization may be able to:

  • create or manage your account;
  • view assigned content;
  • view certain practice or progress information;
  • manage access and permissions;
  • communicate with you through the Services.

In those circumstances, the organization may act as a separate data controller or business for information it controls. Its privacy practices may also apply.

Melo will provide additional contractual or privacy terms where required before launching organization-managed account features.

19. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may revise this Privacy Policy as Melo changes or as required by law.

The updated version will be posted at melopiano.ai with a revised “Last Updated” date.

If a change is material, we may provide additional notice through:

  • email;
  • an in-app message;
  • an account notification;
  • a prominent notice on the website.

Where legally required, we will request consent before applying a materially different use of previously collected personal information.
